ACT (Arts Created Together)
ACT is excited to announce the dates of its
all-school Asia Culture Series. Beginning the first week of the
Asian Lunar New Year (Year of the Dragon), these performances will be held
during the Thursday all-school meetings at 11:30 a.m. Please join us for
these three unique programs .
- Korean Tae Kwon Do: January 26
Master
Youn Junghun of Youn's Taekwondo will demonstrate the art and skill of this
ancient martial arts tradition.
- Japanese folk tale, Cat Mountain: February 9
Behind
the Mask theater troupe will bring this story to life with masks, traditional
Japanese songs and original music.
- Indian Dance and Music: March 15
Rachna
Agrawal will perform classical Kathak, a North Indian temple dance dating back
2,000 years.
We are also honored to announce that Newberry
Award winning author Grace Lin will visit Fiske on Friday, February
17. She will speak to our students in grade sessions (K-1, 2-3 and 4-5),
showcasing the multicultural themes and illustrations of her many award-winning
books. Her work highlights the Chinese culture and Chinese-American
experience.
- For more information about this dynamic author, including
interviews and award details, please visit her website: http://www.gracelin.com/.
- To mark this literary occasion, we are offering a selection of Ms. Lin's books for purchase and autograph. The two page order form lists a range of chapter and picture books (age/reading level indicated) in both hardcover and paperback. The purchase deadline is Wednesday, February 8. Please note that the author will only be able to sign books pre-ordered
with this form. The signed books will be delivered to the students
after the Winter Break holiday.
- In addition, we also hope to give each child a small souvenir from Ms. Lin's visit!
Our hope is to
teach our students - through the arts - about the multicultural diversity
of Asia as well as the diversity of our own school community. If you have any
questions, please contact the Fiske PTO.
Thank you! Kamsamnida! Arigato! Xie xie! Shukriyaa!
