Enriched Learning Opportunities
All School Meeting Every Friday morning at 8:55, our entire school gathers together in the gym for School Meeting. This weekly gathering has become an important Fiske tradition contributing greatly to the development of our strong school community. Meeting is a very special time in our week when we come together to share important school information, introduce new students and staff, celebrate student successes, and talk about Respect, Responsibility and Best Effort. Throughout the year we enjoy performances by individual students as well as each grade level. Parents and family members are always welcome to join us at School Meeting. There is the rare occasion when we do not have School Meeting so if you are thinking about joining us, you might want to call ahead.
Fourth Grade Science Club Fiske Science Club is open to any fourth grader interested in an extended science adventure. The club meets once a week after school and is run by parent volunteers as well as Lexington High School students. Using Youth Exploration Science kits students participate in hands-on learning experiences ranging from building a solar-powered car to launching a home made rocket.Fifth Grade Chorus & Instrumental LessonsAs part of the Lexington Music Curriculum, all fifth grade students participate in the Fifth Grade Chorus. The chorus meets once a week for an hour and performs a variety of concerts throughout the year. This year the chorus is under the direction of our fantastic music teacher, Mr. Hart. In addition to the vocal experience, students in grade five, as well as grade four, may elect to take instrumental lessons. We begin string instruments in grade four and band instruments in grade five. Like the chorus, the band and orchestra perform at a variety of venues throughout the year. Learning BuddiesLearning Buddies is a community building program through which younger classrooms pair with older classrooms (e.g. a first grade classroom pairs with a fourth grade classroom). Learning Buddies meet for thirty minutes each week and students participate in learning activities selected by the classroom teachers.
Student Council The purpose of the Fiske Student Council is threefold: School Improvement, School Spirit and Community Service. The Student Council is open to any fifth grader interested in serving. There is no election process to serve on the Council. In order to participate, interested students are asked to write and present to their class a speech that answers the following questions:1. Why do you want to become a Student Council representative? 2. Would you be willing to give your free time to support the Council? 3. How in the past have you demonstrated yourself to be a role model and how will you serve as a role model in the future? 4. What special strengths would you bring to the Student Council? 5. How would you assist in building a peaceful community at Fiske? How would you help other children become peacemakers?
The Student Council generally selects one major community service project per year that will involve all Fiske students and staff. Student Council reports are given during All School Meeting. In addition Council members are charged with creating unique Spirit Days and serving as role models and peacemakers for the entire school.
