Arts Created Together (ACT) Programming, Chairs: Cynthia Wimer & Songyi Kim Working with classroom teachers, committee members determine which arts programs would be great additions to the Fiske School curriculum. Parents schedule the programs, greet performers and compile evaluations from Fiske staff after the program. In the past, we have booked Chinese Ribbon Dancers, authors, musicians and actors.
Big Backyard, Chairs: Anne Lee, Trisha Kennealy, Donna Burns, Abby Janes (trainer) The Big Backyard Program is a series of nature walks on school property and adjacent lands that enhances the existing science and social studies curriculum in each grade. Observation, learning to ask good questions, problem solving, and respect for the natural environment are emphasized throughout the program. This program depends on parent volunteers to lead the 30-45 minute walks held during school hours. Volunteers are asked to attend a general training and "walk specific" training programs prior to participating.
Kids Cooking Green, Chairs: Trisha Kennealy, Chorlette O'Neill The program consists of a series of after-school classes and activities introducing 5th- and 6th-grade students to the importance of eating locally grown food. Through hands-on cooking and lively classroom presentations, students learn about nutrition and the positive impact eating locally can have on the environment, and their bodies. Each class has a nutritional component, an environment component, and a cooking lesson.
Science Fair, Co-Chairs: Luiza Aguiar, Tracy Heibeck, Pam Winters Now in it's 6th year, the science fair showcases student 'inventions' and 'imaginations' and is complementary to the science curriculum at Fiske. The actual exhibition is set up at Fiske and viewable for one day. The committee plans sessions to help students develop project ideas and arranges for a professional scientist to speak to all students prior to the Fair. Committee members organize all aspects of the fair including scheduling, set-up and break down.
Science Programming, Chairs: Kat MacDonald, Jillian Tung, Christine Cunningham Committee members work with classroom teachers to determine which science programs would be great additions to the Fiske School science curriculum. In the past, the PTO has contracted with The New England Aquarium, The Boston Science Museum, the Discovery Museum and Drumlin Farm. Parents schedule the programs and compile program evaluations from the staff. This committee is most active over the summer and at the beginning of the school year when programs are scheduled.
Fourth Grade Science Club, Chair: Brinda Gupta Perfect for scientifically-minded parents, our 4th grade Science Club meets weekly to explore different scientific experiments and projects. In past years, students have worked on magnets, electricity and rocketeering. Individual science kits for these weekly meetings are purchased using proceeds from the Club fee. This is a really great way to work directly with students.
